Serving Fairfax, VA

BMW introduced the all-electric i4 sedan a few years ago, combining standout engineering and style with luxurious amenities. In 2024, the i4 is joined by the i5 in the BMW EV lineup. The i5 is closely styled after the gas-powered 5 Series but is individualized in critical areas. How do the 2024 BMW i4 and i5 compare?

Performance

Four electric motor systems are available for the i4. The eDrive35 has one 282-horsepower motor and a 276-mile battery range. The eDrive40 has a single-motor design with 335 horsepower and a 301-mile range. The xDrive40 has a 396-horsepower, dual-motor layout, all-wheel drive, and a 307-mile range. The M50 produces up to 536 horsepower with its two-motor system and range of 269 miles. There are two trims for the i5. The eDrive40 is identically equipped as the i4 eDrive40. The i5 M60 has a two-motor system with all-wheel drive, and it puts out 590 horsepower.

Appearance

The 2024 i4 is elegant and sporty, with a low-slung roofline and deep, bold side contours. A blue accent line streams across the lower door panels, and the wheels have large, triangular spokes. The i4's nose has a black, kidney-style grille that spans from top to bottom. Both horizontal and vertical accents frame the grille. The double-elemental LED headlights have a rigid, sharp look. The 2024 i5 has a taller yet streamlined roof with a rolling lower accent on the sides that trends upward toward the rear. The wheels have twisted spokes. The glossy black grille has vertical, metallic elements and a unique, flared shape. Both the lower fascia and air vents are prominent.

Features

The 2024 BMW i4 and i5 are remarkably well-appointed with many of the same features. Some of these are a head-up display, heated front seats, a premium Harman Kardon sound system, wireless device charging, traffic jam assist, a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, an auto parking system, a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting, wireless smartphone app connections, and others. The i5 also has voice commands, rear sunshades, USB-C ports, hands-free highway driving, and other features.
