2018 BMW (F90) M5 vs 2016 BMW (F10) M5

Proudly Serving Fairfax, VA

One of the first things you can't help but notice as you walk up to the new 2018 (F90) M5 is the bold and subtly more aggressive stance. Those who would say it looks like the outgoing 2016 F10) M5, may need to look a bit closer at the athletic yet luxurious sweeping lines and stop. From this point on, there is nothing about the New M5 that bears much resemblance to its predecessor. In fact, the differences under the skin are such that this car is deserving of its own nameplate.

Performance

While we could talk about the fact that the F90 M5 is bigger in overall dimensions than the F10 M5, no one really wants to hear that. What the true BMW fan wants to hear about, is how much more power is hiding in the engine compartment.

Under the hood of the new M5 beats the heart of a true lion. Here lies a much-revised version of the BMW twin-turbocharged, 4.4-liter V8. This beast of an engine produces a full 600 horsepower and churns out a massive 553 pound-feet of torque. All this power is transferred to the an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. On top of all this, the new (F90) M5 comes equipped with BMW's latest all-wheel drive system designed to let you turn off the front wheels when you want to.

Under the hood of the older M5's older variant of the same engine. This version of the 4.4-liter V8 produced 575 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. The (F10) M5 came with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission and was only offered in rear wheel drive.

To compare these two excellent BMW cars, let's look at the 0 to 60 miles per hour times for both. The older M5 clocks in at a very respectable 3.9 seconds. Not to be outdone, the new M5 boasts a time of 3.2 seconds. This is a huge difference and one that may become bigger as more tests are run.
