2018 BMW X5 vs 2017 BMW X5

Proudly Serving Fairfax, VA

The BMW X5 is consistently highly ranked among the competitive luxury midsize SUV class. In fact, U.S. News and World Report named it as the best 3-row luxury midsize SUV for families in 2018. This year, this expansive five- or seven-seater SUV has been treated to just a few tweaks compared with the 2017 model.

Performance

The biggest news for the 2018 BMW X5 is a new automatic transmission, which provides faster shifts and a more agile handling experience than the already impressive 2017 model. Both the 2017 and 2018 incarnations of the X5 boast five engine options, including a 300-horsepower six-cylinder; a diesel engine that gets 255 horses and above-average fuel economy of 23/29 city/highway miles per gallon; a plug-in hybrid that can go up to 56 miles on a single battery charge; and two different V8s that get blistering horsepower of 445 and 567 respectively. With this type of versatility, there's an X5 for almost every type of driver.

Appearance

Just a slight revision of the external appearance of the 2018 X5 V6 models: you may notice that the tailpipes have an aggressive new trapezoid shape. If you choose either the xDrive35i, 35d, or 50i trims, you can opt to upgrade to all-new 21-inch wheels with performance tires.

Features

For 2018, all BMW X5 models have been upgraded with a rearview camera and access to BMW's ConnectedDrive app. Standard features for both 2017 and 2018 include synthetic leather upholstery, real leather trim, and heated, power-adjustable front seats. As for tech, you'll get the latest with a 10.2-inch touchscreen display, HD radio, Bluetooth, USB, and a nine-speaker stereo system. Drivers also enjoy standard comforts such as dual-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic moonroof, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and push-button start.
