The old adage is to stick a penny in the center tread of your tires. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, then your tire(s) is ready for replacement. What if I told you that your tires should actually be replaced before that point? In reality, tires should be replaced at 4/32" of an inch as opposed to the 2/32" that the penny test measures. Your tires may ok in dry weather from passing the penny test but may not perform well enough to avoid an accident in poor weather conditions.
